Several Hoosiers found their route to work Monday morning blocked by high water. Heavy rain combined with melting snow and saturated ground caused lowland flooding in many areas of Central Indiana. A Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect for much of Central Indiana until 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Crews with the Indiana Department of Transportation were called out to place signs and barricades in order to notify drivers. It was too late for some who tried to drive through flooded roads. Emergency crews were kept busy trying to rescue those who became stranded. INDOT crews were also out clearing debris from drainage sites.

Officials are strongly warning motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads. According to the National Weather Service, most flash flooding fatalities are vehicle related. Six inches of standing water is enough to cause problems for vehicles.

The Town of Fishers Public Works Department spent Monday barricading impassable roads and reopening flooded streets once the high water receded. Town officials advise all residents to remain cautious and warn you not to attempt to pass roads that have been flooded.

“We urge residents to use caution when driving home this evening,” said Town Council President Scott Faultless. “If there is significant water on a road, the best judgment is to avoid it completely.”
